Fish Go To School? ADI Lesson
This lesson is the first published draft of an ADI Lesson created in support of the Evidence of Social Learning in Embryonic Minnows project, directed by Dr. Jessica Ward and funded by the National Science Foundation, project #2152668.
You can download the Lesson Plan Teacher Materials and the Student Package for free. Within the lesson, there are links to three videos that students will use as they learn about the work of a team of researchers learning about social learning among minnow embryos.
The goal of the lesson is to help middle and high school students learn how scientists conduct inquiry by engaging in an authentic inquiry. Learners learn and reflect on ideas about how fish learn to identify and avoid predators, leading to their own plans for collecting data from a pair of videos of fish embryos before and after exposing them to a “predator cue.”
This lesson is presented in the format of Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI), and will also soon be available on the ADI website at the University of Texas Austin.
